Affiliate Marketing : Increase Your Amazon CTR With This Simple Trick

by DB on October 11, 2011

I have had tremendous success with Amazon affiliate marketing after learning some neat tricks on how to write a good product review from the Amazonian Profit Plan. The authors of the Amazonian Profit Plan, Paula and Wanda, are great marketers making some serious cash with Amazon product reviews. I highly recommend that you follow them at their Affiliate Blog Online site.

The credit for the following trick goes to Joy, who commented about this trick in this blog post. The trick is a simple one, but an effective one at that. All you need to do is bring the reader’s attention to the following sentences on your product review:

“Amazon’s discount prices change daily so check out the Oct 11, 2011 sale price for this item right now by clicking here.”

The above sentences display the current date with an important buyer keyword “discount prices”. This will get the reader’s attention as they think that Amazon could be offering discount prices on their website today. Joy also says that her CTR for reviews with the above sentences is at 8%. That is a very good click through rate with product reviews. I will show you how easily you can get this done on your wordpress blog by using shortcodes.

What Are Shortcodes in WordPress?

Shortcodes is a very cool feature in WordPress that makes it amazingly easy to reuse pieces of code in your blog entries. If you have a piece of code (for example displaying Adsense Ads between blog entries, Adding link to your RSS feed, etc. ) that needs to be repeatedly used, you can create a shortcode for that piece of code and just call the shortcode in your blog entry. For more information on Shortcodes, check out Smashing magazine’s Master WordPress shortcodes. We will be creating a shortcode that will insert a sentence like above in your blog post.

Creating The Shortcode

Open the functions.php file of your theme. This file is usually located in the wp-content/themes/YourTheme/ folder. I use the excellent Thesis framework for all my wordpress blogs. If you are using thesis then you should open the custom_functions.php file that lives in the wp-content/themes/thesis/custom folder. Add the following code at the end of the file you just opened.

function ShowTodaysDate($atts) {
    $today = date("F j, Y");
                                "link" => 'http://',
                                "merchant" => 'Amazon',
                                "product" => 'product'
                                ), $atts));
   return '<span><a href="'.$link.'" rel="nofollow">Click here</a> for today\'s ('.$today.') low price for the '.$product.' on '.$merchant.'.
          Discounts change every day, so check out today\'s price now! </span>';
add_shortcode('todayratecheck', 'ShowTodaysDate');

Now you can call this shortcode by placing the following line in the exact place where you would like the above sentences to appear in your blog post. If I am promoting the Ipad2 sold by Amazon, I would call the shortcode in my post as follows:

[todayratecheck link="" merchant="Amazon" product="Ipad2"]

In the above line, we call the “todayratecheck” shortcode that we just created. We pass the following attributes to the shortcode:

  • link – This should be the affiliate link to the product you are promoting.
  • merchant – name of the merchant. You should use the name of the merchant whose product you are promoting.
  • product – name of the product you are promoting.

Calling the shortcode will produce the following text in your blog entry.

Click here for today’s (October 11, 2011) low price for the Ipad2 on Amazon.
Discounts change every day, so check out today’s price now!

I changed the sentence to my liking. You can change it to whatever you wish to in the code where we created the shortcode.

That’s it! You can now use this shortcode on any blog post or page. This little trick should definitely help in increasing your CTR. Please leave a comment below if you found this post useful and if implementing this shortcode helped with your CTR.
